Have a whirlpool model WTW4800XQ0 washer that squeals like a pig in agitation. Any ideas?

Just when it agitates? I was stumped for awhile trying to locate the pig noises on one of these. I tracked it down to the top of the suspension rods where they swivel. I slathered some grease in there and all was quiet. That's one possibility.

Its not squeaking from movement, its coming from the gearcase area. Its a very loud squeal not a squeak.

Its most likly one of 2 things, sus rods, or trans and seal, check the obvious, then spin basket by hand in each direction slow, if u here squeal, its from seal, I replace trans with new seal, under warranty

AGAIN SUSPENSION RODS ARE NOT GOING TO LET OUT A LONG CONTINUOUS SQUEAL, LETS TRY TO THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX A LITTLE BIT! HAVE YOU EVER HEARD A SLIPPING BELT SQUEAL ON CAR THATS WHAT IT SOUNDS LIKE. EVERY TIME I POST A PROBLEM I COME ACROSS ON A WHIRLPOOL WASHER EVEN IF ITS A BROKEN KNOB SOMEBODY SUGGESTS IT MIGHT BE SUSPENSION RODS!!!!!!!
ALSO WHEN ITS AGITATING THE TUBS NOT TURNING SO ITS NOT GOING TO BE A SEAL. THANKS FOR THE SUGGESTION ON THE TRANNY THAT WAS MY GUESS.

Just start taking it apart piece by piece and examine the parts that are most likely to be the problem. On these washers you can have the transmission out in 1/2 hr or less. Maybe there is some foreign object binding the machine. Best of luck.

It doesn't turn continuously in one direction but it does turn back and forth, out of synch with the agitator due to the action of the planetary gear system in the gearcase and the fact that there is no braking mechanism. It's part of the design.

Thanks, I was aware that it moved back and forth but discounted that being the problem because the squeal is not stop and go its one long squeal. One other thing I noticed was that the pulley seemed to have a great deal of play but didi not seem to be slipping. Since its about 60 miles from my home im ordering a tranny, belt and pulley and hoping for the best. Thanks for all the input, will let you know what I found.

None of the parts your taking are continuosly single directional in this case.
Have you actually heard the noise in person, or taking someone elses word. I only ask because you seem so convienced it couldn't be anything except something continuous, single directional.
But, if it can be multidirectional and make the squeal then I'm sure some of the suggestion have hit the mark.
Since you insist the noise is low, near tranny, my picks would be seal, belt, or pulley.
