I have a washer that did not shut off and continued to fill the tub but it appears to be intermittent. How would you go about diagnosing this issue when it is an intermittent problem?

 

Is there a common failure in the pressure switch circuit to look for? Any technical bulletins available?

 

It was built in the 2009 timeframe and appears to be in good condition otherwise.

  Remove the front panel and check the air chamber on the lower left side of the tub for gunk buildup. Also remove the hose from the chamber and check it for gunk. Clean out if necessary. If this is ok, check the hose for cracks/splits/kinks all the way up to the pressure switch. If ok, I would just replace the pressure switch.

OR possibly filling with Water over-night (Water Valve) ?

note:
after any cleaning / inspecting / etc,,
make sure Tub is empty of Water (for reference) before re-connecting Tubing to Pressure Switch

There is gunk in the air chamber and a reddish color substance in the line immediately out of the air chamber.

 

How do you clean the gunk in the air chamber? It does not look like it is removeable.

  It is not removable. Use a turkey baster with hot water and try to flush it out as best as you can. Be careful on the nipple that the hose is connected to, you don't want to break that off!

 

  As per RegUS_PatOff's comments, is the problem that the tub would overfill or that water was coming in even with the washer off?

The washer was running through a wash cycle at the time. It evidently did not stop filling and overflowed the tub. The customer was home at the time.

 

Does GE have a technical bulletin detailing proper cleaning procedure of this cavity? Does the use of fabric softeners or any other additive cause this to accelerate clogging? The cavity was cleaned a year ago and the pressure line was replaced at that time.
