Well, this washer has been repaired many times, but now I'm stumped. About 2 weeks ago, just quit at end of first spin cycle. No issues until that moment. First, checked pump. Clear. Then turned shaft on motor. Agitator worked. Then tried other direction. Basket turns. Coupling OK. Removed motor and jumpered lid switch. Motor still just hummed.

 

At this point, I assume motor. Ordered new motor off Ebay (realize that may have been an error). Got new motor, installed and put everthing back together. Worked fine.

 

For one week. (many loads !)

 

Now, exact same as original symptoms. Disassemble (again) follow same sequence. Motor all by its lonsome on floor just hummed. Truned shaft whilst it was humming and varoom ! Put it on another cycle and worked fine other direction.

 

Now the bummer - reassembled (still full of clothes and water). Nothing but a hum.

 

Help ! Really like to fix this thing. What are the odds of the "new" motor being bad ? I would think pretty low.

Almost sounds like a bad capacitor.

and/or a good visual

 

OR bad Contacts in the Timer

Failing Timer contacts..........Check voltage at the motor when it is in the spin cycle...Start winding... ( possibly find about 60-70 volts )......When spinning by hand you are the start windings, it stays running on the run windings...........

Thanks everyone for your input. I have ordered a new capacitor. We'll see. As to the timer contacts I have a question: aren't the timer contacts different depending on which cycle you choose ? I have tried in all different cycle settings and still only a hum. Just curious. If not the capacitor, then Ill start looking for timer.

  Does the problem occur for both agitate and spin? The polarity of power to the start windings is reversed when going between agitate and drain/spin. Two different sets of contacts are used to accomplish this but the same sets are used for all cycles. With no load on the motor, i.e. sitting on the floor with pump removed, disconnect the capacitor and short the two wires together. The motor should start this way without the capacitor. If it still won't start, it is likely the timer, bad connection or broken wire. Wire can be broken with insulation intact. If it does start this way, it is likely the capacitor.

 

  When you said it quit at the end of the spin cycle, did it stop because it was in fact the end of the cycle or did it stop short of the end of spin cycle? If the latter, it wouldn't be the capacitor because it is only used to start the motor. It is not in the circuit after the motor is running full speed.

Yes - both agitate and spin have the same issues. I'll try the capacitor wires shorted. I'll keep posting as I try things. Thanks again !

visually inspect the red wire at the bottom of the molex plug going to the motor.that terminal is known to get loose and turn black. also try the wiggle test while starting the motor. Thats all I got. peace out...

Got the new capacitor today, installed in 3 minutes ! That was it ! Working just fine thank you.
