What usually causes a tub to lean in the whirlpool direct drive washers? I have tried replacing all the glides before, tried replacing the springs, never have figured out just what causes the lean.

or it was dropped in shipping and the base is deformed

Are you sure you're checking for ALL the springs (rear counterbalance and 3 side suspension springs)?

I have seen the skate plate (pt#3946509) out of position due to off balance loads or a quick stop due to the brake aasy.

I checked the 6 glides, the three tub springs and the back spring. tub leans slightly to the back right and once in a great while it bangs the back of the case. These direct drives are usually very good at spinning with even a very unbalanced load. I'm guessing the bottom stucture must have a slight tweak to it. I guess I will recommend they run it and try to rebalance when it messes up. The balance ring doesnt seem to have lost water and it is tight on the tub. which wouldnt explain the lean anyways I wouldnt think.

Has the floor got a wicked pitch to it? Like from the house settling?

No. I even tried moving the legs to offset the problem but it didnt help at all.

What nickfixit said, and you mentioned too - structural deformation. What else is left?

The rear spring gets weak, and/or the hole it resides in gets worn oblong. Thats the long sob that lives at the 12 oclock position of the tub. Try drilling another hole in the base just below and to the left or right of the original hole. Your customer is probably overloading the crap out of the machine.I sometimes salvage the springs from discarded machines in the dumpster for just such occasions. Obviously you will check the positioning of the skate plate while youre in there, right?
