GE GTWN4950L0WS washer - chattering noise under tub

6 posts in this topic

I have a GE GTWN4950L0WS washing machine making a chattering noise under the tub.  It fills, spins and drains fine.  I guess some ears or cogs not cooperating in the transmission?  Anyway, I'm stuck in removing the 1 11/16 nut (which has loosen and a clockwise arrow on it). post-20444-0-88372000-1367799812_thumb.j   I chewed it up a little with a pipe wrench.  Shouldn't this be easy??? I have an 1 11/16 deep-well socket on it now, but I can not break it free???  Am I being an idiot? Am I missing something or just a weakling?  I assume I need a new clutch ( Clutch WH38X10017, shaft and mode shifter assembly)  Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks!

Thanks!  I know the wrenches are out there, but wouldn't you think a deep-well socket would work just as good?  Have you ever had one that was frozen?  Maybe I'll borrow one from a friend as an experiment...

Just chalked up another lesson...  Finally got it apart.  Transmission fine.  Ok, I'm an idiot.  It was such an odd noise, like metal grating on plastic. I couldn't pin it down earlier.  Re-assembled.  Thought it was somehow a bad plastic coupler, even though it looked fine.  Tried it again re-assembled.  Same noise.  Looked much harder to pin it down.  So simple.  Something in the drain hose against the pump slightly.  Bra wire!!!  post-20444-0-96732400-1367843756_thumb.j How could it get there???  Who knows.  Removed.  Works great.

Those bras are nothing but trouble and frustration but sometimes needed.  2143.jpg
