GE Defrost

Does anyone have a tech manual for m# GFSF2KEXABB ?

 

Another company replaced the defrost el and the bi-metal. 5 days later the cust. called me and I found a burnt mother board and a bad thermister. Replaced them. the refer still frost up. HELP!!!

Where is the board burnt?....Did you check evap fan motor? If the fan doesn't turn, the evap will build up frost as the air is not circulating, giving the appearance of a defrost problem. Remember, a bad fan motor can take out a board on a GE fridge

The evap fan is fine. The fane has a diode in it. This may be the problem. The board is burnt on R43.

R43 is the evap fan motor resistor.....GE specifically says if that resistor is burnt, replace the evap fan motor and the mainboard. If you put another board in the fridge without changing the fan motor, you will fry the new board  as well.  Let me add to my previous post, the fan may turn and appear fine upon inspection but may have destroyed the defrost function of the board

That's not a diode, it's the evaporator thermistor.  It would not / could not cause this problem.  The fan motor is shorted internally and fried the muthaboard, taking out R43.

Thank you. I was told that thay  corrected tiis problem on the new refers, but I never saw the data sheets on it. New board and fan are ordered.

If that's the case ...would he need the fan with the thermistor....if in fact, his thermistor is part of  the molex connector, something i don't think I have seen in a bottom mount.   Although this particular fan is not covered in the discussion, see http://appliantology.org/topic/41782-ge-refrigerator-fan-with-thermistor/

Re-reading that topic, I see the fan motor I linked to for this model  is different from either of the motor discussed in that other topic.  And that's the motor that pulled up in the RC database for this model.  So... Imma ax Oceti

 

@Oceti: does the linked fan motor look identical to the one you're replacing?

I don't think I've run into a bottom mount with the thermistor attached....but hell, there's so many frickin versions of what are supposedly the  same GE's it's hard to tell.

Yeah, I was taking a shot in the dark saying that was the thermistor he was seeing cuz I was ASS-U-MEing that's what it had to be.  Then I took a closer look at the RC part photo and saw there's no thermistor there.   :wacko:

but that means  he ordered the right part...that's what really matters....curious though about the diode thing.

 Hello again. All the parts were replaced and it still is iced up. When I went into the self-diognosis test the display will not respond. Could this be the problem?

We have defrosted 4 times, Low temp with a wet dry vac. This takes a little longer but it keeps the heat out.

Was the evap thermistor tested/replaced?

 

I do not believe the user interface on your model has anything to do with the defrost function. You definetly needed a new board and fan motor. Why your interface is not allowing diagnostic mode may be altogher a different issue...make sure your connectors on your main board are seated properly. Also check all thermistors but particularly the freezer evap thermistor.

Let's make sure we are on the same page

 

1)Did you test the thermistor from the mainboard using the ice water test?

2) Did you perform the heater-defrost limit test from the mainboard as well?

 

There are only 4 things that can affect this circuit....board, heater, limit and thermistor. If your heater, limit and thermistor tests fine, and considering you are having an issue with your display, you may have another bad board......all subject to connection/wiring problems

 

also and I'm not sure on this but does the instructions for your board require cutting a thermistor wire for bottom mount fridges as found on the wr55x10942 boards?

I learned the hard way a few years back but I have been behind other appliance companies and have had to cut the wire for them. 

 

However, as I remember, the problem with not cutting the wire was no cool air to fridge side from the damper not opening.

#2 no

 

But I will give it a try.

I'll check the tech sheets and find the jump.
