WP Electric Dryer Heating Element Comes on Dead Otherwise WED5310SQ0

7 posts in this topic

As a favor to my daughters best friend who is also a pastor I have a bit of a mystery.

The dryer is dead expect for the heating element comes on when you engage timer - "without" hitting the start switch.

All voltage is good at the terminal block.

However what caused this initial problem is this a three prong dryer so the common severs as a ground on cabinet and that burned up.  Pastor replaced burnt up end of ground and still got nothing.

Just wondering where I could possibly give him some advice since he wants to do the repair himself.

Thanks for any help!

Because the heater comes on,the centrifugal switch on the motor is stuck in the closed position or the heating element is shorted to the canister (ground).

The stuck centrifugal switch would keep the motor from starting,so would a bad door switch and a bad thermal fuse.

You have a lot of components to check out.

Your quick reply is much appreciated.

Can you tell me how you un-stick a centrifugal switch?  - since it sounds like thats the place to start...

1) Heater Element partial shorted to chassis / ground

2) ground wire overload caused by Heater Element partially shorted to chassis / ground
