I replaced the magnetron in this 7 weeks ago.

Got a call yesterday from the lady saying she came home and smelled something and tracked it to the microwave.

When she opened it she said it was too hot inside to touch even though it wasn't turned on, so, she unplugged it.

Said she went outside where the guys were and ask if any of them had been using it and they said no.

Said later she plugged it back in and cooked some bacon and hasn't been able to use it since then.

She says it comes on like it's cooking but doesn't heat.

My question is has anyone ran into anything like this on a microwave being hot even though it not been running?

Or did some jackass set it for 30 minutes use it 2 to heat their coffee and restart it and walk off?

That's a weird one.  One possibility is that "Start" button on the touchpanel shorted and the unit was running empty and now the cavity TCO is open.  Can test the "Start" button on the ribbon connector.

If the Start button checks good, it's also possible one of "the guys" actually did use the unit but lied about it.

We have had a few microwaves start up by themselves. Usually it's a bad touchpad or electronic control board.

Kitchenaid had that problem with their microhoods.  The solution was a redesigned control board that would not allow the unit to start until after the door was opened from the previous use.

Well they don't want me back till next week. I was leaning toward the control.

Ya know, I don't expect to find anything but a bad magnetron, cause she said after unplugging it awhile to cool down then she cooked bacon, then, after that it wouldn't work at all.

So I fear the problem is intermittant.

Ge microwaves have a problem of turning themselves on

sometimes it's just the magntron and it's cooling fan , nothing else

in this case the magntron may overheat in a empty oven

if this was to come in my shop , i would not repair it , it is going to need a magntron and then if you don't replace the control board and touchpad you risk the chance it turns itself on again a week later, better to junk it than someone get hurt

we had one that the magntron was on when the door was open !!!!!

for some reason only Ge over the range microwaves do this , no other brand , makes you wonder

if you google microwave fires , you will see nothing but GE microwaves that turned themselves on in the middle of the night or when nobody was home

SORRY ABOUT THE SPELLING , I FIX GREAT , I DON'T SPELL WELL
