 promised a customer I would ask if there was anything else but a bad keypad that would stop a surface light from coming on. Light bulb is new and tested good. Everything else on the microwave is working.

there's a Relay on the Controller Board for the Cooktop Lamp,

and another Relay for it's Night-Light function

Never change the light bulbs on these units while the microwave is plugged in, if the bulb breaks on you and the light  switch is on it will take out the relay on the electronic control board.

Are there any tests I can do in the field?  Not sure they will spend the money anyway, more for future reference.
