Kenmore washer model 110. 82372110 will agitate fine without clothes in, but as soon as even a small load is put in, the clothes wind up around the agitator and it makes a loud clicking noise as it tries to agitate. The clutch dogs look fine, I think, and I couldn't see anything else wrong when I took off the agitator. Thanks!

Can you see if the agitator is moving back and fourth when it is supposed to be agitating?? If it is not there is a chance the transmission has broken internally. Does the water stay in the washer when it is to be agitating or does it fill and drain back out. This would be a broken pump flapper. If the transmission shaft is turning back and fourth in agitate but the agitator does not turn when it is put back on, you could have worn out agitator or trnasmission shaft splines. Please see if any of these are happening and provide some more answers. Pegi

the agitator does turn back & forth and the water does stay in while it agitates. I experimented with it & it does fime with no clothes, then when you put some clothes in, it will go fine for a while, rhythmically back & forth but then will catch on the backstroke, pause, click then proceed forth again. The clothes also get wadded up aroung the agitator and it seems as if when they do is when the problem starts. I guess this is the real definition of getting your panties in a wad(HAHAHA)!. This seems to be a problem with the agitator shaft spring inside of the transmission has broken, so the agitator shaft gear is not being held down with a load in the washer. The weight of the clothes and water is lifting the shaft up, dis-engaging the gear on the shaft from the gear inside of the transmission. This usually happens when the transmission gets water inside from the spin tube seals leaking. As a test when this happens see if it will agitate if you push down on the top of the agitator, which would let the gears engage. If this is the problem it will be worse with a full load than with a small load. If it is the transmission you will want to replace this with a Whirlpool/Roper/KitchenAid/Kenmore (sorurce code 110) Direct Drive washer. Let me know the outcome of the hold down test please. Pegi

Hi Pegi! I tried pushing on the agitator while running & it didn't make any difference. I'm not sure if I made myself clear in the first place: The agitator still turns even with clothes in, but it only turns in a clockwise direction. On the counter-clockwise spin you can see it trying to go, but it can't, then makes the loud click and goes forward again. Thanks again!

I sure may be wrong, but the only thing I can think of that would cause this is the transmission. These machines have not been made for 20 years so something sounds like it broke inside of the gear box. Anyone else have a different suggestion?? Would hate to have her replace the washer if there is a simpler fix... Pegi

Try watching it agitate with clothes, when it starts to make noise, see if the basket is turning. Also, put it into spin with clothes, and see it the agitator starts going back and forth. The gearbox can fail mechanically and spin and agitate at the same time. It will ball up the clothes and make big knocking noises. The only fix is a rebuilt gearcase.
I would put the money toward a new machine.

Maybe your agitate coil is going bad if it works for a few minutes,or heaven to betsy maybe a broken wire in the harness to the agitate coil.

The basket does not turn while it is agitating, and the agitator does not go back and forth when the machine is in spin cycle. The clutch dogs do not have a serated edge, but the part of the agitator where they sit does have a serated edge which they catch on.:? Thanks!

Perhaps you just need dogs for the agitator. Does the bottom part go back and fourth? If so the transmission is ok. I was thinking of a one piece agitator when you described the agitator would not go back and fourth , not the dual agitator. If the top and bottom part of the agitator goes round and round to the right, your tranny is sick.

is it a 2 peice agitator?? that is,does the upper half of the agitator have a large threaded part on it(spirals) if so,try turning the spiral part- it should turn one way,but not the other. if this is so, that is how the 2 peice agitator is supposed to work when full of clothes,only the bottom half goes back and forth,the upper half only turns one direction.

Yes, the agitator is two pieces. The upper half will turn both ways, but when I turn it to the right it turns by itself & when I turn it back to the left, the bottom half turns with it. When the machine is going, both the upper & lower half of the agitator turn back & forth. Could it really be just as simple as the clutch dogs? I thought they looked fine, but who am I to judge? Thanks!

Sounds like the dogs could be the problem. The bottom part should go back and forth and the top part to the right only. With the belt driven washer you could turn the agitator back and fourth by hand when the transmission is in nutral, but not when it is shifted into agitate.

Pegi, I'm embarassed to say I think you were right in the first place- I think the tranny is sick after all. When the machine has been going for a while & the noise starts, both the upper & lower half of the agitator DO turn to the right only. Sorry to be such a pain! I'm assuming I should go ahead & buy a new machine if it is indeed the tranny & was wondering if there is a way to support this website by buying one(new or used) through it. Thanks again for all your help. You've been swell!

Liesel,you say that AFTER your machine has agitated awhile then starts agitating one way? Is that right? If so, check your wig-wag cause it sounds like yopur agitate coil is breaking down as it gets hot. I haven't seen very many of these transmissions go bad.

Yes, that's right-the agitator works fine for a while & then starts turning only one way. Is a wig-wag a real thing?(some of these names like wig-wag, clutch dogs crack me up)Is the agitator coil something I could replace myself? I'm glad to hear there still may be hope! Thanks!
