I have a tech sheet that is with refrigerator, the model number tag has been pulled off.  person says they bought unit at a scratch & dent sale 4-5 years ago.  The tech sheet number is W10158911A.   Can it be cross referenced to a model number.

the problem with the SxS is that the ice chute door has broke 7 is falling off allowing the freezer to freeze up in places it is not suppose to.  i haven't played with a ice chute yet, my next questions is how do I access it to attempt the repair if I can find a replacement part.

check out this thread and the links therein. You will find two repair methods 1) repair kit 2) Certifiedtechs p-clamp method.

I prefer certifiedtechgroups method but most use the kit as discussed in that link and here

You should be able to right away but it times out.

What site do you use to find the applicable model numbers from the tech sheet number?

Ahh, found out how to cross reference a tech sheet number to applicable model numbers.

1.  Go to AppliancePartsPros and enter the tech sheet number.  If the tech sheet has a letter after it, that's a revision number, drop that from the number and search.

2.  On page that pulls up, scroll down to the bottom of the page and you'll see a list of the applicable model numbers.

The refrigerator in question is most likely a "PEX" (product exchange) unit that Whirlpool or Sears took back in the warranty period.  Even though Sears has the warranty responsibility they can still get Whirlpool to cover PEX's in most cases.  A PEX is the result of 3 or 4 repairs for the same issue during the warranty period.

The process requires the PEX company (usually an authorized independent servicer) to remove the mod/serial tag and then "dispose" of the unit.  These units *sometimes wind up being sold again to unsuspecting bargain hunters.

Scratch and dent units purchased from Whirlpool (as in by the truckload) have model serial tags on them.

BTW - That refer door repair kit mentioned above works great!  Just make sure when you stick the metal plate on its where you want it because it doesn't come off easily if at all.

Some really good info there Seniors Samurai and Thirsty! Have to commit it to memory... not! It's too important to leave to my senile-tinged brain.... saving to everclear... uh... Evernote.

btw Thirsty, for beer "Star Chicken Shotgun" has to rank right up there with Sam Adams' "Kosmic Mother Funk" as best named beers. But at nearly 7% abv, I betcha after a couple of those, you couldn't say "Star Chicken Shotgun" three times real fast:

"barkeeb, I wana nutherz Stop Shizin Starguns.. no.. I mean Chickenzzz Shittin Gunshots.... uh, just gimme what i had b'for."

I had explained to the customer that the tag was probably missing due to the fact it was suppose to be disposed.   I can feel the stickiness where the model sticker used to be.   Also crossed my mind that maybe it was a stolen unit & sticker was removed for that reason.     Everything else is working fine on it.   I will call the client & see if he wants to go thru with the repair.   Thanks for all the information.  If he does authorize repair I make be back here asking for pointers.

Yes Bruther Durham, that dam Star Chicken can get you into trouble some days.

I see you are a fan of Bells, that is another semi-local brewer only about 50 miles from me.  Two hearted is a "go to" for me when it's on tap.  I loves me some IPA  :pint1:

Durham, I never was able to find Certifiedtechs's P-clamp method'   I have the authorization for the repair & ordered the door kit #8201756 per the service bulletin I found.  After I ordered the kit I found some repair video's showing a dispenser repair kit 8201649.   And a few random samplings of the model numbers supplied by Reg shows RC kit to be the latter kit number.   What would you suggest, maybe having both of them before I go out on call.   Like I stated I have not played with ice chutes yet, am looking forward to it just like my 1st GE baffle.

Sometimes I've had issues with the ice door sticking randomly after installing that 8201756 kit. One thing I start doing was shaving off these tips on the top left and right of the white microswitch bracket. It's like maybe a 1/8 nub on the top above each microswitch on top of the bracket. Maybe I'm the only one who has that issue after changing that kit. I just thought I would throw that out there in case you have that problem too.

The 8201649 doesn't come with the metal piece to rebuild if the tab has broken off. I would just take the 8201756 with you as all the pieces you need are in it. And as BryanS says it makes it a lot easier fit if you shave the tips off. Just take your time and you'll be fine, good luck.

I just remove the broken tab only, then screw a metal p clamp (small clamps that secures icemaker water line to fridge or fill tube) using a self taping screw to the housing. The clamp holds the pin on the right side. Works great once you figure out the correct angle.

Interesting. I'd like to see a picture of that sometime.

Here is the method... I've done it so many times I can do it in a few minutes....

on this cover, there should be two little slots at the bottom of the panel.... ( ya  gotta get down on the knees and look up at the bottom of the panel  )

8132011phredpictures039.jpg..

I use a mini-pry bar,....when you pry on the panel, it will pop off at the tabs on the inner frame......I did not know if this fix-it kit mentioned by K-dog........

fixed this one last week....

7292011phred014.jpg

hinge pivot point broken off..

7292011phred021.jpg7292011phred024.jpg.

...made this part out of a 1/4 inch 'P' clamp from a copper water line ....7292011phred026.jpg

took a few file swipes to get the correct dimensions...7292011phred032.jpg almost as good as new..... darn picture alignment

I usually screw through the wide part and pass the pin through the eyelet.
