Something is causing your gas valve to close when it should be open. Coils that are going out will cause this problem and could also cause the gas smell since weak coils can cause the valve to not open or close properly, I would start with replacing the coils first if it were my dryer.

I was having a similar issue, where it was taking 3 hours to dry a load, with model number MDG7057AWW, and had already replaced one of the thermostats to no affect. Then I came across this forum, and saw this discussion.
I tried drying with the vent disconnected, and the dryer still took too ong, so yesterday I replaced the coils, which did the trick.
My thanks to Pegi, Moostafa, and Samurai for the information about the coils.

Having the identical problem as Ralph. Ordered 2 new coils. Will let you know how things go. After studying the problem for hours....the problem with my Maytag dryer MDG7600AWW is that the gas valve is not opening consistently.
