Time for a New Unit - What Capacity??

Floodsie

Recommended Posts

Well the compressor has gone bad on my twenty year-old Carrier (Model # 48KLA160-300BF). It's a roof-mounted package unit and the name plate says the Input is 100000 BTU/Hr(Output area is blank) discharges to the side. I feel it's probably best to go ahead and replace the thing. My home is 2200 sq-ft and the old unit did a great job so I want to get something with similar capacity. I live in the desert where summertime temps reach 110+ at times and winter can be in the teens. So two questions: 1. Is this unit approx. 8 tons?? 2. What brand(s) should I be looking for. Thanks in advance! - Mike

Hello. I went to Carrier.com and checked ur M# Found 48KLA160310BE. Its a 5 ton unit. R U sure U were looking @ cooling BTU and not heating. Does have 100,000 btu input for heat but only 60,000 4 cooling and this is the largest tonnage KLA I could find.

York, the best, but then I have to say that ;), Trane, Carrier, Lennox are all about the same. U are paying more for the name.

Rheem, Rudd, Goodman, all do a good job, are cheaper, but some including Lennox have more OEM parts that U can only get from them.

Go for the highest SEER rating U can afford. Even if U move soon, it adds value to the house.

Thanks for the info! Yeah the nameplate didn't have any info other than the Input Btu, model #info and such.. I'll be sure to get at least a 5 ton unit.. Thanks again!
