Testing a Whirpool Refrigerator Light Switch

3 posts in this topic

My 1982 top freezer Whirpool refrigerator Model EHT171HKNR3 is giving me fits. The refrigerator section light bulb started acting erratic and finally quit working. I replaced the bulb with a known good bulb. I tested the wires connected to the bulb receptacle with an ohm meter and I think that the problem is the switch.

I would like to remove the switch for further testing. I visited the Whirpool site to no avail and found some help on removing switches on a general help site. The steps described were to pry with a paint scraper. Pushing and prying does not seem to work.

The freezer section switch looks interchangeable. If only I could remove it.

Any suggestions other that calling a repairman?

If it is the square body switch with the triangle pusher, it just prys out with a small screwdriver, however do not know what you have for sure without your MODEL NUMBER.  Be sure to unplug that box first as there is power to the light switch all the time it is plugged in.  You could also have a defective light socket....Pegi

Before you buy a switch try something.Unplug your box, take out the bulb, and take a small flat bladed screwdriver and gently pry up the tab that the bulb contacts.
