The compressor is running fine on my 3 year old window a/c and it cools very well...however, just recently the fan will stop running from time to time.  If I am aware of the fan not running I will turn the unit off for an hour or so and restart.  Everything starts up just fine then several hours later the fan will shut off.  The panel seems to be working fine also.  I humbly ask the experts for opinions.  Thank you.

No, the fan would stop but the compressor was still running...and since I posted it's working just fine now.  I did raise the back of the unit outside about an inch thinking maybe it needed to be at less of an angle.  If it acts up some more I'll give you a shout.  Thanks!

I have the same problem on a Whirlpool ACQ189XS, but it shuts off after 10 minutes. Turning on and off several times usually gets it working again, but sometimes I have to wait for 30 minutes. Anyone have a clue what could be wrong? A service manual would help tremendously - already tried new capacitor.

You could try oiling the motor but it probably is going to need to be replaced. Use Zoomspout oil from Ace hardware. It is HVAC approved temp resistant, non volatile, and the slipperyest stuff on the planet. It comes with a telescoping spout to help reach the oil ports on each side of the motor.

My Whirlpool ACQ158XPO has a similar problem. If set to either low or medium speed the fan motor will eventually 'stall'. You can hear the fan motor getting slower then speeding up again then getting slower, etc. It will do this for a while (10 minutes to 2 hours) and will eventually just stop - especially if its on low. It will not stop if I run it on hi (Turbo). Im going to pay the local appliance company to fix it. They came out and said its the fan motor and quoted me $96 for ther motor + $150-180 for labor. I see that I could have bought the motor from this site for about the same price but I have no idea how to replace the motor as I have no repair manual. Is this a hard job? I could probably figure it out. I guess Im going to watch the repair guys change the motor and learn. They did say they will have to remove the unit from the window to replace the fan. That would be a problem for me as this is a big unit with an outside support bracket and I had help installing it but I dont have anyone that could help me remove it.

Ill let you know what happens.

Yeah it is kinda complicated but you could probably do it. Go for it. Get the unit outside and place it in a nice shadey locale. Clean up the unit real good and let it dry out before you install the new motor. You will need a long allen wrench to get the blades loose. I use rustbuster to help. Keep the kids and old folks out of shouting distance as there will be several cuss words uttered before the job is complete.
