AC not cool enough and thermostat not working properly

I have a split system AC. Air coming out of the vents is cool, but I think not cold enough. I'm not sure. Is the air supposed to be cool or very cold to the point of almost freezing? Does the freon need to be recharged? Secondly, at the return vent, where the air is drawn in to be cooled by the furnace, I used to be able to hear the air being drawn in, letting me know that the AC is running. Now I can't hear it which makes me think that it is not running when it actually is. Thirdly, the thermostat is broken as far as it is not giving a proper reading of what the actual temperature is in the house.

Going back to the basics. Have you checked your air filter? If you check the return and the supply air temp at the furnace you should have 18-22 degrees difference.

Hi,

The HVAC in the house where I live is probably typical of most. There is a return air grate covering the filter leading to the plenum, from which the air is drawn to go through the condenser/heat exchanger. The unit is a combo heating and cooling with the condenser sitting on top tightly sealed with aluminum tape, etc.

Where and how can the temps you refer to be read? I have a thermometer with a 4 inch probe on it.

Thanks for your help.

Cheers!

Jim

That is an evaporator or sometimes referred to as A Coil that sits on top of your furnace. You would poke a small hole a foot away from the A coil and out of the main air stream and also in the return air drop before the filter. That is how you would read the differental.

be sure NOT to poke a hole into the A-coil itself:P
