Fortunately, she listened to my sage advice :-) She picked up a Whirlpool direct drive for $30 off Craigslist!

Thanks to all who have responded.

Thirstytech - I agree 100%, and that's what I plan to tell her. I wouldn't sink upwards of $300 into a 10 year old machine of a design with known issues. She's done well getting this far without any problems, IMO!

Bit of an update:

Went there, ran it through diagnostics and passed. Ran a full load and it went OK. Lady called me on Friday evening, it had stopped with a "CI" code (instantaneous current limit). She's actually quite technically competent, so I'm getting good info from her. It looks like the wash plate isn't levelling out and it's spinning with it off-level, causing it to put strain on the motor. Anyone experienced this sort of thing?

Ah, Calypso, the demon child produced from the loins of Whirlpool.

I can just imagine the strains of Carmina Burana as each one rolled off the production line. Probably the best description I've ever heard of the Crapypso....

I haven't seen it in person yet. I'm suspecting this could be as simple as a broken belt. I'm long gone from the trade, just doing this as a favour. Ah, memories....

Yep, the old 'Q/0' thing.....
