The schematic seems to indicate that there are 3 transformers, one of which seems to provide the power to these lights.  Unfortunately the parts breakdown does not seem to indicate which of the 3 operates which. I believe its the smaller one of the 3 but not sure.  I too was leaning towards the power supply board as being the culprit. Anyone else seen a common reason for this problem?

Just a thought, Maytag had problems with the rinse aid dispenser leaking onto wire harness inside door.  Harness would swell up and break.  May want to seperate door liner from door and check condition of wires going through bottom of door.

Thats it? Just 2 screws in the back and one underneath? Do I assume you mean right panel facing the front?

Dual water shut offs.  Timer sounds plausable.  I remember a few years ago whirlpool having problems with this selector switch but havent seen it in a few years.  Hot water heater is close by and this is the Arizona desert so not likely "cold slugs".
