my guess is that a "surge" is most likely to damage tv's computers and other home electronics before it will damage a heatpump or airconditioner.

what I mean is that the amount of current surge that it would take to cause major damage to your unit would also take out any other sensitive electronic devices in your home........

I would consider whole house surge protection (although a bit more costly).
