I'm thinking maybe in the operating manual they have something for activating the sound or removing the sound.  Has anyone heard of this feature.

Nothing in the owner's manual:

Just some more uneducated comments:

I have seen where a lack of water circulation has caused this. Water sits on the bottom, keeping the T-stat cool, while heat rises from energized heater - with no water flowing over the heater - melts the plastic.

My experience shows that a failed OWI sensor will also dramatically increase run times, trying to add heat to a sensor that can't detect it...

Also, The heated dry option seems to be more of a timed sequence, rather than controlled by a sensor. Which, could be a control issue...

The microwave oven is one of the most dangerous appliances to repair. The high-voltage potential combined with the high-current capability of an operating microwave oven pose a deadly threat to the reckless worker. In addition, microwave ovens are radiation-emitting devices. Normally this does not present a problem. However, improper replacement methods or tampering with safety systems could expose the unwary troubleshooter to dangerous levels of microwave leakage. Therefore, extreme caution and proper procedures MUST be used at all times.

That being said, it's just probably stuck, try a little mechanical agitation...
