OOOOK. After the Control board swap yielded the same results, I used a cloth to clog up the un-damped slot between the FZ/FF bulkhead. It passes between the Evap box and the top of the fridge. With that clogged, the fridge descended to the set temp and the damper began opening as needed to control temp. The freezer still seems to work a bit harder than I imagined to keep cool, so you are right on with the insulation kit tip.  The freezer is also not stocked up, so perhaps that will help it hold temp.

What is that slot supposed to function as? Air return?

Awesome.

OK, well why would the unit not shut off after passing below the set temp? And the unit is living in a conditioned space, with the same insulation provided at the factory... could there be any other sensor or defrost isue, etc that I have overlooked?

Thanks for all your help - I'll still learned a lot either way. I just dread having to replace this thing as it is a giant - 700+ pounds, and removing it and replacing is a feat for many men.

DAMNIT!!!   I left the icemaker out for a few nights - no difference. I just got a new motherboard yesterday and installed it. The temps started marching in the right direction, freezer was cooling back to 0 and fridge was heading up to 37.... then this morning, 0/27! And whenever I check, the dampers are closed. How is this possible! What else could it be? This damn thing!!!

Well, after 12 hours overnight, with settings at 0/37, this morning it was 3/32. Upper damper was open last night and closed this morning. Back when the whole unit was close to room temp the thermistors were all around 5k so they seem legit. Control board ordered so we will see what this crazy thing does then.

Oh I am doing all the tests you suggest. I was just passing on things I note as we go here. The distorted housing might be a symptom of an icemaker problem, and I was adding that it is still making ice at least at this point. I reckon ask this might help paint a picture. Let me get back to wrestling with this evap cover ;)
