I would have tried to spin it and see if it starts running. I would still do the motor and board just to be on the safe side. You might be able to just get away with the motor but you would need to verify if you are getting voltage or not or if the voltage is fluctuating. It sounds like to me it was trying to run. These are low dc voltage so they aren't real powerful motors.
Was the freezer door the one replaced? If so the harness should be new but that doesn't mean the connector it hooked into doesn't have corrosion. Usually if the doors are misaligned it ia because a cam is worn. Sometimes they can adjusted by a screw. Other times the floor is uneven so it warps the frame to the point the doors are off.
