After I notice that it didn't spin, I have to manually turn it to loosen it up a bit, then hold my finger on the lid latch thing (sorry, don't know the technical name for it), and then help it get going and it finishes just fine.

It also only seems to do it when there is a small load in the washer.

I will check that out. Yes, the lid did lock during spin. There is no smoke, just a burnt rubber smell.
