Basicallly the timer operates like a mode switch which is equivalant to the transmission in a car to chage different modes for different functions.

It's even simpler than that. Think "loads and switches." The timer functions as a bank of switches which, in turn, are controlled by the mechanical algorithm built into the timer cam construction. The whole purpose of the timer switches is to control the power supply to various loads in the washer: motor windings, water inlet valve coils (working with the pressure switch), timer motor, etc.
