  1. KitchenAid WRF989SDAM00 has recurring problem with ice build-up on the evaporator coils, resulting in fan noise as the fan hits the ice. I want it to stop. I have melted the ice but it comes back...it used to take months between melting the ice and now it takes weeks. I want a permanent fix. As I understand it, there are 3-4 parts that could contribute to this, the defrost timer, defrost thermostat, defrost heater, or the control board. Sadly, several of these parts are out of stock at RC, so I may have trouble sourcing them. As with other older appliances (this one is only maybe 6 years old...), the parts get end-of-lifed and difficult to find. How do I test the parts to diagnose which to purchase? I can put my ohmmeter across the heater...but I need to locate the heater first. Is it clear where to connect the meter and can I do it in the freezer, or do I need to fully disassemble it? Is the thermostat the temp sensor (attached to 1"x 4" (appx) plastic with curved outside) that clips to outside the sheet metal separating the evaporator assembly from the freezer? Where is the timer located and how do I test the timer? And how do I verify it is not the control board...a very expensive part? thanks
  2. Hi, Okay here goes...had an Error Code 50, cleared the code out, would come back in a day or so. Fridge was holding 39 degrees. I cleaned the condenser coils bu they were fine no dust. Same story EC50 comes back. Since I have a spare fridge, moved all food over. Was for a rental and its sitting there all empty so thats good pressure off from the Missus. Then I replaced the condenser fan motor, with an OEM motor ordered from SZ certified appliance store Fridge would not get below 46-47, set at 38, just sat there 46. Removed shelves, diffuser light, removed the back panel. I see ice only in the top left where the copper line enters the evap coil. Its a black evap coils, no hint of copper in the actual coils all blaack (i read somewhere maybe older evap copper coils were a problem on SZ). When door open and I press 2 switches, the evap fan works.I gently knocked the ice off upper corner of evap coil and am trying to lower temp slowly (set at 45, wait, then try set 40, wait, etc). Thoughts?
  3. So... water periodically building up in the bottom of the fridge side (only), seems to be coming from the right side of the evaporator. Cannot figure out where/how to access the drain, which I assume is clogged with something. It's got this "air flow tower" thing, and a few screws that look like it MIGHT remove the housing around the top of the evap unit from the inside of the fridge, but pretty unclear if that's where I need to attack this, or from the back of the unit. Any advice? I think this is the relevant drawing, and the issue is probably in part 960 or 226, but how to best access? Thanks for any advice!
  4. I have ice building up in the bottom of the freezer compartment on my Samsung RF4287HARS French Door Refrigerator, below the pull out drawer. It will build up to about 3/4"-1" thick and then impedes the closing of the door. Every 4-6 weeks, I need to remove the freezer drawer, melt and chop the ice and put everything back in. I have been doing this for three years on a 5 year old fridge. Samsung Customer Service is ABSOLUTELY NO HELP. What causes this? And can I fix it myself?
