All Appliantology tech members are invited to join in this workshop on all things Appliantological.
We have a special session planned for this one. Instead of the usual Show 'n Tell on a technical topic, we're going to post tech sheets in the comments to this Calendar Event (scroll down to see what's posted so far) and ask specific questions that can only be answered by reading the tech sheet. If you at least try to answer the questions beforehand, you'll get a lot more out of it. The tech sheet and the questions are posted in the comments section below.
Your mission, if you should choose to accept it, is to check out the questions for each one and try to answer them ahead of time. Then come to the Dojo to see how well you did!
Who: This workshop is only available to tech members at Appliantology.
When: Saturday, April 27 @10:00 AM Eastern Time.
      Where: Online via Zoom

New HVAC System - Electric Heat with Air Handler

I am looking in to replacing my HVAC system. My townhouse uses electric heat. The system i currently have is an 8 SEER compressor, and I have a matching air handler in the attic. My electric bills are outrageous int his cold weather.

Where can I do some research on possible replacements? My repair man said the condensor shuts off below 30 degrees, as this is how they were built. But he quoted me on a new system whose condensor doesn't shut off until zero degrees. Is this true?

Any idea how to estimate my energy savings by dumping my old 8 SEER unit?

Any help or advice is greatly appreciated.

Is there Gas available to the townhouse ?

You don't mention what part of (what) country you live in, and not listed in your profile...

Unfortunately gas is not available. Too many people are too cheap to get gas lines into the neighborhood. I guess thats what you get when you buy into a homeowner's association. But I digress...

Anyway, townhouse is on Long Island (New York). Been a  cold winter...

FYI - here is the quote I got

All are for Rheem brand machinery:

1. 13 SEER unit, 15KW electric heater, variable speed air handler, 410A freon - $4,800

2. 16 SEER unit, 15KW electric heater, compressor would have 2 speeds (which he claims would increase my efficiency), variable speed air handler, 410A freon - $6,300 (he said $6,800 if I wanted to go with Trane instead of Rheem, but he said he likes the Rheem equipment)

Both are for 3 ton units.
