All Appliantology tech members are invited to join in this workshop on all things Appliantological: bidness, customers, tools, troubleshooting, flavorite brewski, whatever. Webcams and microphones are open and live!
This workshop is also a great time for any students at Master Samurai Tech to bring any and all questions about the coursework. We're happy to walk through any concepts you're having trouble with. Think of it like office hours with your teachers.
If you have a specific appliance problem you'd like us to talk about, post it here! We need a problem statement and a PDF of the tech sheet or schematic so we can all see it on screen share. If you have a PDF that isn't already in the File library here at Appliantology, send it to us by attaching it to the contact form.
Also, follow this Calendar Event so you'll get notified of new posts here. Look for the "Follow" button either at the top of the topic on desktop or below the topic on mobile.

My daughter and her husband don't have the money to call a repairman so we are trying to diagnose this ourselves.  The condenser motor was frozen so we replaced it.  Now it runs and the air handler runs but it only blows room temperature air.  Right now in Florida that is about 90!  where should we look next?  Thanks in advance.

Since the condensor fan motor went out you might try looking for a high pressure switch that is manually reset.

Turn the unit on and listen to hear if the compressor comes on as well.  If not look for a high pressure switch - usually a plastic encapsulated switch attached to one of the small copper lines inside the condensor or mounted on the metal case somewhere.  It should have two wires to it and a rubber head/knob on top.  If this is the case, slowly push in the rubber knob and feel for a click.  This click will confirm that is was tripped and hopefully the compressor will come on.

If the compressor does come on and the large copper line does not cool off (suction line described as beer can cold) then you possibly have a compressor that runs and does not pump which can happen due to damaged valves or cranks from an over heating (bad condensor fan motor) situation.  The sound of the compressor may be noisy or odd and a check of the amp draw on the common leg of the compressor will show a low reading (somewhere around 1/2 or less of the listed FLA value).  The compressor may also run for a bit and then stop due to an internal overload sensor in the windings (the condensor fan wil continue to run) - there is no cool refrigerant gas passing over them to cool the motor.

Another possibility is low refrigerant charge.  If this is the case you will notice a frosting or freezing of the large copper/suction line within a few minutes of the unit starting up.

Best of luck.
