GE GG40S06AVF00 Water Heater Burner Won't Stay Lit

4 posts in this topic

So we wake up Christmas Eve to find that we have no hot water.  I checked water heater and the pilot was out.  I immediately thought it was a bad thermocouple but decided to try to re-light the pilot, which to my amazement lit immediately and stayed lit.  So I thought all was fine but when I turned the thermostat back to it's normal position, the burner ignited then went out in a matter 5 seconds or so.  I tried to re-light the pilot but it wouldn't light until I waited an hour or so.  Also, this unit has a sealed chamber and it states the gasket must be replaced if the cover is removed.  First, what could the culprit be and second, is it necesary to replace the gasket if I remove the plate?  Merry Christmas to all and thanks in advance to all of you and your infinite wisdom.

Sounds like you may be another victim of the infamous FlameGuard® system. This water heater is not made by GE, but by a ninja manufacturer and GE then slapped their label on it. Here's the service manual for the Ameedican water heaters-- I think they're the real manufacturers of this one. Compare the diagrams in the manual with yours. If same-o, same-o, GI, then the pot-bellied, bald-headed Buddha hath not grinned down favorably upon thee and thou must gird up thy loins like a man and prepare for a mighty battle. Hanta yo!

Ill wager it came from Lowes or Home depot, rather than a licensed contractor. Am I psychic?....

Hi, Happy New Year..just wondering did you find out what was causing the problem? I have the same thing going on, still under warranty GE sent me a thermo coupler installed still doing the same thing, now they are sending me the gas vale assembly. Any help or advice would be great and yes it came from Lowes.
