Refrigerator Compressor Clunking Noise

10 posts in this topic

My refrigerator is a year and a half old Whirlpool side-by-side. It makes a "clunking" sound for 10-30 seconds. The problem seems intermittent and I can tie it to a specific event. I pulled out the refrigerator and noticed that happens when the compressor is working. I have been the compressor wobbling back and forth when it makes this noise. It starts wiggling back and forth and then it "clunk...clunk...clunks" about 4 times per second.

I was able to capture it on video here (

), but you can't really see the compressor. By the video you can tell the noise starts loudly and slowly gets quieter. Even more strangely, when I pull the fridge out, it doesn't seem to make the noise anymore.

Is this a compressor spring problem or something else?

Please help me! Thanks!

Out of curiousity - Is it a spring in the compressor that is broken or something else?

Yes, but springs and motor are hermetically sealed in compressor case and non-serviceable

Thanks so much for your help. One last question -

Do you have a ballpark estimate to have the compressor replaced? Seems like a pretty involved job.

1.5 years old. Don’t you have a warranty?

System work is $$$$$$$. With a good chance of a call back in 3-6 months.

Have you seen any of the new warranties on refrigerators in the last 5 years???

Very seldom if every do you get any more then the standard full 1 years parts

and labor warranty any more, (Oh how much the manufactures believe in their products!!!!!).

I believe possibly a few of the high end units SubZero especially have the extended 10-12 year

warranty on the sealed system still. Used to be you could expect to have at least a 5 year parts

only extended warranty on sealed system repairs.
