GE refrigerator PSS27SGMDBS too cold

15 posts in this topic

Hi, the digital display on this fridge shows temperature much colder than the set temp. I checked the actual temp with an immersion thermostat and the displayed temp is correct. Wouldn't this mean that the thermister is okay? What might be causing this to happen? Things like the water filter freeze up if left unattended too long. Would the service manual help? If, so can I get one? Any advice? Thanks for the help.

Ed

Suspect a broken damper door, located in the housing at the top of the ff section.

No way to confirm this except to take this section apart and see for yourself...

Thanks for posting the blog. I found it helpful but it doesn't state how to enter the service mode or link to something that does. Could you follow up with that information as well or send the service manual? Thanks.

Sorry, I seem to have a problem distinguishing between S's and 5's. That 5 should be an S, it should read PSS27SGMDBS.

When you put it diagnostic mode and test the damper, you will probably hear the motor even though the door is broken. But as Kurtius said, you got to put your eyes on it. Sometimes you can get lucky and see that the door has broken off without having to take the housing apart. And that's a real pita.

If you take it apart and find the door broken and you need to order the damper assembly, I would suggest you put the broken assembly back in place. Especially if it will take a few days to get the part. Otherwise you run the risk of the cold air from the freezer blowing directly on the water filter housing, causing it to freeze and crack. Then when it thaws... well, you know what will happen. So it is worth it to keep an assembly in stock.

This repair is a pita but I've made lots of money off of it. Btw you may also find the water reservoir has frozen causing water not to be dispensed. So while you are waiting to complete the repair, get a bucket of hot water, put it in the bottom of the fridge and set the reservoir in it. Leave it there until you return and have the customer replace the hot water at least once. You can do it as a service if you have to return with a new damper assembly anyhow. But if you have to return just to remount the reservoir, you gotta charge extra. You can also cut the reservoir out and set it in the sink with hot running water. This works fast but you have to re-install it with john guests or compression fittings.
