This workshop is also a great time for any students at Master Samurai Tech to bring any and all questions about the coursework. We're happy to walk through any concepts you're having trouble with. Think of it like office hours with your teachers.
If you have a specific appliance problem you'd like us to talk about, post it here! We need a problem statement and a PDF of the tech sheet or schematic so we can all see it on screen share. If you have a PDF that isn't already in the File library here at Appliantology, send it to us by attaching it to the contact form.
Also, follow this Calendar Event so you'll get notified of new posts here. Look for the "Follow" button either at the top of the topic on desktop or below the topic on mobile.

WRF736SDAM Ice maker not working correctly

We purchased a Whirlpool WRF736SDAM unit back in late 2014. At around 18 months (6 months out of warranty,) the ice maker started acting up. All of the symptoms are the same, it is just longer periods of time between when the system will make some ice.

Every week or two, the ice maker will make 3 to 5 trays (cycles) of ice. One it gets to a certain point (there has been no rhyme or reason as to how much it will produce each time,) the unit will stop making ice, and what is in the bin will start to melt. Then a few a week or two later, it will make a few trays of ice again.

I ran the diagnostic tests with the following results:

15 - Ice Level Sensor = 02 - Bin Not Full

36 - Ice Box Fan = On & Off working Correctly, and air flow verified.

56 - Ice Maker Error Codes  = E2 - Motor lost position

57 - Ice Maker Harvest

  • 20 - Motor Running CW until it finds Home Position; In-Progress
  • 02 - Heater and Motor Off; Harvesting Not complete, Doors must be open
  • Doors are all closed (with apparently good seals) and you can hear some type of small motor running.

58 - Ice Maker Heat Activation & Thermistor = 10 - IM Heater On; Temp Warmer Than Harvest Temp

59 - Ice Maker Motor

  • 10 - Motor Running CW until it finds Home Position; In-Progress
  • 02 - Heater and Motor Off; Harvesting Not complete, Doors must be open

Does this sound like a particular part (or combination of a few specific ones?) I wanted to get expert opinions before purchasing items one at a time until I find the right ones needed... At first I was thinking the motor, but I am still not convinced...

Thank you for your time ! ! !

  • 5 months later...

I had one with the E2 error code the other day. Could not get it to go into harvest via service diagnostics. Popped a new icemaker and it went through a harvest unlike the old I/M. Got a call back the following morning of no ice and scheduled for the following day. I then got a call a day later that it was making ice. Wonder why it took over 24 hrs to start making ice.

Gonna start with the basics.

What is your freezer temperature?

Does the failure coincide with warmer days?

When is the last time you cleaned the condenser coils?

Was the machine in an "I wanna make ice today" mood when you ran diagnostics?

Does the ice chute door close properly?

Sounds like you may have an intermittent cooling issue. The ice maker system is based on temperature, if the temperature is higher than about 14°F then the machine wont make ice. You may not have noticed a cooling issue at that temp because it is still less than a freezing temperature of 32°F.

When in doubt you could always schedule a diagnosis and estimate with a local service tech. You have no obligation to have said tech make any repairs. The cost of a service call is worth not buying needless parts and it supports local business.
