All Appliantology tech members are invited to join in this workshop on all things Appliantological: bidness, customers, tools, troubleshooting, flavorite brewski, whatever. Webcams and microphones are open and live!
This workshop is also a great time for any students at Master Samurai Tech to bring any and all questions about the coursework. We're happy to walk through any concepts you're having trouble with. Think of it like office hours with your teachers.
If you have a specific appliance problem you'd like us to talk about, post it here! We need a problem statement and a PDF of the tech sheet or schematic so we can all see it on screen share. If you have a PDF that isn't already in the File library here at Appliantology, send it to us by attaching it to the contact form.
Also, follow this Calendar Event so you'll get notified of new posts here. Look for the "Follow" button either at the top of the topic on desktop or below the topic on mobile.

Should I trust this Kenmore error code?

My Kenmore 417.48102701, when any cycle is started, activates the door lock and that’s all.  When going through its step test, the blinking lights indicate an E56 error.  This is a problem with the motor or speed controller.  Makes sense, the motor never spins during the step test.  The motor ohms out as it should… but before ordering a speed controller, I’d like to run this by you experts to confirm that this is likely the problem.

The reason I have any doubt at all is that when I try to view the code by pressing Start & Pause/Cancel, the lights do the 5 blinks for the first digit but just do a quick flash for the second digit and return to normal standby appearance.  Should I trust the clear '5-6' I see during the step test or should I suspect a bad main controller for giving me conflicting codes?  Also, does the fact that the machine doesn't even fill with water cast doubt on the motor being the issue?

Any advice here will be greatly appreciated.
