Kenmore 625.384260 Water Softener issue

We just bought a house and it came with a Kenmore Intellisoft 420 Series water softener (model 625.384260). It does the job just fine. However, even though I have the regeneration scheduled for 2am, and the system clock shows the correct current time, regenerations consistently start around 7:30pm or so. Also, the salt level indicator never adjusts itself as the level goes down. It stays on whatever level I input after adding salt.

Would doing a system reset solve these problems?

Also, there are the letters E and Q in black boxes in the upper left corner of the display, and I have no idea what those mean.
