Maytag MDE9520AYQ Dryer Timer Won't Advance

Recommended Posts

I have a Maytag electric dryer, model number MDE9520AYQ. It runs and heats but the timer will not advance in the auto dry modes. It does advance when I put it on timed dry. I ordered and am waiting for a new cycling thermostat, but I am wondering if it can be anything else. I checked and there is good air flow through the exhaust duct. The cycling thermostat is the only other thing I could think of it being.

This models doesn't seem to have moisture sensors, but the cycling thermostat has a 5th terminal, for an orange wire wich is likely for the timer advance in auto mode.

Since dry air is easier to heat than moist air, the timer likely checks how often the cycling thermostat opens do determine if it shall advance or not.

You might also want to try chocking the outlet a little while running the dryer empty on high heat and taking outlet air temperature readings to check at which temperature the thermostats opens and stops the heater. Open and close temperatures shall be close than the ones written on the thermostat.

A bad timer would likely never advance, even in timed dry mode. A bad power supply could cause the timer to not advance, but it would also prevent the dryer from heating.

You might also want to check if there is a current in the ground connector while the motor is running (or better, check for continuity between heater terminals and its housing). Although quite rare, if the heating element is ground, this can reduce the total heating power for the same airflow, causing colder outlet air and not opening the thermostat.

I have the exact same dryer problem with a LDE4910ACW.

The cycling thermostat 150-25 opens the circuit at around 130-135 instead of 150 and closes around 100.  Would this keep the timer from advancing in auto cycle?

When it cycles off The element , you should read power to the timer motor , no matter the temp That it cycles , if it doesn’t, then yes it most likely is.
