Jenn-air gas range sputters on double ring JGS9900BDF

Recommended Posts

After about 5-6 minutes of heating, the outer ring of the double ring burner front left starts going on and off quickly in a sputter. Igniter does not seem to be the problem. Cleaned the burner outlets. Any ideas?

Sounds like the flow of gas is being obstructed somewhere. Might need to dig deeper... into burner tubes.

Great video!

Is the colour orange when you first light it ?

Its 98% blue. Couple of specks of yellow but almost completely blue.

All the other burners operate normally while the outer ring of the double ring burner is sputtering.

What do the other burners do when the big boy goes nuts? Just operate normally?

That's bizarre. I'd open that up and check the gas passage ways (tubes). Would be a good time to have some form of compressed air around.

Check that burner's valve as well. Not going to be easy or fun.

That's definitely being my competence/patience.  Going to have to call in a tech I guess.  Question:  Whenever we end up replacing this stove, do you have any recommendations for a replacement.  What downdraft models are worth a darn?  Or is is better to suck it up and cut a hole in the ceiling/roof to have a hood installed?

It’s definitely better to suck it up, literally. Heat rises and downdraft cooktops are fighting physics and common sense. If you have the ability to get over the range ventilation and exhaust it outside it’s a much better setup than any downdraft or snorkel hood.

As long as you’re doing that, may as well consider a complete kitchen renovation as well.

Before you give up on this one. Does the burner headc lift off and give you access to the outer ring’s orefice? Try removing it and give it a quick gas purge to see if there is something blocking that tube. I feel like that has to be your issue.

I know, it’s like something is flapping back and forth in the supply somewhere.

Thanks - I will try this next weekend when I am home.  I will first blast it with compressed air, then I will give it a gas purge.  When you say "gas purge", do you mean just turning it on HI and then off, or do you mean something else?

Exactly that.

Sarcasm warning, do not follow this instruction: Hold a lit cigarette in your mouth to safely burn off any extra gas.

I would HIGHLY suggest that you unplug the power cord before you do this GAS PURGE!!!!!

The Ignitors can spark and ignite the raw gas streaming out!!!!!     (The ignitors would be some what away from the gas stream with the burner caps off and probably wouldn't ignite but better to be safe then sorry).

Ok, seems to be solved. The key was

There are two tubes on this burner. Assuming one feeds outer and one feeds inner.

Since inner doesn’t appear affected I’d check tube feeding outer burner.

Ok, seems to be solved. Gas purge alone did not work, but about 2-3” down into the outer gas tube was a small orifice. Used a cake tester, which was the perfect size, to clean that gas orifice. That seems to have done the trick. Will report back if problem recurs. Thanks everyone.
