All Appliantology tech members are invited to join in this workshop on all things Appliantological.
We have a special session planned for this one. Instead of the usual Show 'n Tell on a technical topic, we're going to post tech sheets in the comments to this Calendar Event (scroll down to see what's posted so far) and ask specific questions that can only be answered by reading the tech sheet. If you at least try to answer the questions beforehand, you'll get a lot more out of it. The tech sheet and the questions are posted in the comments section below.
Your mission, if you should choose to accept it, is to check out the questions for each one and try to answer them ahead of time. Then come to the Dojo to see how well you did!
Who: This workshop is only available to tech members at Appliantology.
When: Saturday, April 27 @10:00 AM Eastern Time.

Whirlpool Dryer Squeaking on Startup

I have a Whirlpool dryer that always sqeaks (very loudly) when starting up. The squeaking lasts for about 2 minutes or so until the dryer heats up then the noise goes away. This happens all the time now and the squeaking lasts longer when temps are colder outside. I haven't been too concerned about it as it always goes away, but I want to be ready to repair it if the squeaking eventually doesn't stop or if maybe the dryer stops tumbling. I figure it is either the belt squeaking or the pulley that turns the belt. Can anyone give me advice and where to get the part?

Likely an idler pulley going bad, but... your blower wheel should be closely inspected as well.

Not likely, but its likely The pulley that tensions the belt= the idler pulley as above

  • 4 weeks later...

I ordered a maintenance kit a few weeks ago that included all pulleys and a new belt.  I replaced everything last week and noticed bits of belt in the bottom of the dryer (thought at first they were mouse droppings).  No more squeaking.  Was worth the $40 for the kit.
