The light fixture on my mother-in-law's 20 year old Dacor oven has rotted out. I am not concerned with restoring the light function but given the manner in which the fixture has failed I want to be sure the the oven is safe to operate.  I don't know how long this condition has existed, the old girl's memory ain't what it used to be.  She actually doesn't use the oven but she wants to host Thanksgiving so she doesn't have to travel.

There is no way to secure the heavy glass oven light bulb cover as the thin stamped sheetmetal "shell" which supports it has rotted out.  This leaves the light socket exposed in a 3" circular recess at the top of the oven. Is it okay to use the oven in this state? If not, will patch the opening with a piece of stainless attached with sheet metal screws do the trick?

Thanks in advance for any advice you can offer.

The shell itself screws into the top of the oven and the lens screws into the shell.   Both the mounting flanges on the shell  and the holes in the top of the oven into which the shell . Short story, a 3 inch hole in the top of the oven where sits the unprotected socket for a light bulb.
