All Appliantology tech members are invited to join in this workshop on all things Appliantological.
We have a special session planned for this one. Instead of the usual Show 'n Tell on a technical topic, we're going to post tech sheets in the comments to this Calendar Event (scroll down to see what's posted so far) and ask specific questions that can only be answered by reading the tech sheet. If you at least try to answer the questions beforehand, you'll get a lot more out of it. The tech sheet and the questions are posted in the comments section below.
Your mission, if you should choose to accept it, is to check out the questions for each one and try to answer them ahead of time. Then come to the Dojo to see how well you did!
Who: This workshop is only available to tech members at Appliantology.
When: Saturday, April 27 @10:00 AM Eastern Time.
      Where: Online via Zoom

Maytag Washer SAV4655EWW Drains but won't spin

Hi. I have a Maytag Washer, model SAV4655EWW, that drains but won't spin. It sounds like it's trying to do something, but the belts and pulleys aren't engaging.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated!

If the lid switch is functioning properly then you may have a problem in the transmission assembly which would be no bueno as it is no longer available from the manufacturer.

Check the condition of the belt and the idler. With the belt off, can you turn the big pulley in both directions by hand?

Unfortunately the lid switch is working fine. As far as turning the pulley by hand, I can't answer that question right now because the washer is at our vacation home, and I am no longer there. I will be returning there this Thursday (7/11/19) so I will be able to answer at that time. What are the "good" signs and "bad" signs to look for when I try to turn the pulley by hand?

Thanks!

Was it roaring loud in spin before it quit ? If so these machines were very prone to a tubseal leak & spin bearing failure. This washer has a major design flaw in the tub seal that they never was able to solve . I am amazed to hear of one still running. This machine was the final nail in the coffin for maytag before they sold out to Whirlpool.  Don’t spend much money on it !

Make sure the brake will release and allow you to turn the basket in the spin direction.

Good advice, I would follow it. I thought this machine was a Speed Queen design.

Since we got the machine 2nd hand for only $50 three years ago, I think that we have gotten our money's worth. The boss has given the "go-ahead" for getting a new washer.

Thanks everyone for your time and advice! 👍

it was , but maytag severely cheapened this machine.  when it works , it preforms just like a speed queen.    we were open to selling them for that reason .  we started selling them in 2003 and pulled them from the floor in 2004 because of the failure rate,  i put 400 tubseals in 80 washers in the following 5 years.     needles to say, that is the main reason most Maytag home appliance centers folded .
