hello

I have this great old 110.44722400 kenmore portable washing machine.   this week I noticed it was not agitating like it is supposed to.   I ordered a replacement belt.   While waiting for the belt wen I was under the machine having a look i noticed a little lever attached to a spring. . I was able to switch this lever .  After switching the level the washer worked great for 2 loads.  meantime the belt arrive.   I just switched the lever again and installed the new belt.  the new belt does seem quite a bit tighter than the old belt.   Does  anyone know where to get the schematics for this unit?  I really want to see what that switch and spring are connected to so I can trouble shoot if the new belt does not solve the problem.  your help and expertise is appreciated. Thank you

So this part is controlled by the break actuator and more than likely that is the part that is failing. Check the resistance of the actuator and you should have 710 to 870 ohms.

I got about 5 good loads and then the same problem started again..when I  turn the washer on it's back and flip the break board lever into the other position then it works like  a charm for a while.     

I borrowed a multi meter from the tool lending library, took the actuator off and tested.    I got 796 resistance.   The multi meter did bounce around alot. i am not very familiar with using them.   so i dont know if this is normal or if there is an issue with the meter or the actuator.. i believe when I have borrowed this meter in the past I had similar issues with the readings. 

I also noted one of the connections on the actuator is a bit corroded.   not sure if i can open the box and clean the connections, if that will help?   since I got a good reading from the actuator then can we assume that isn't the issue?  

it worked great after replacing the belt.  could it be I just need to tightened that a bit?   

these actuators are a bit expensive and not so easy to find -     any suggestions are appreciated.

Ok I was able to take the actuator apart and clean the connections really good and put back together.  Now I am getting a resistance reading of 1035.
