replace compressor or buy new, coldspot 106. 67067791

25 yr old coldspot started making loud clunk when it stops. A local shop who repairs, and they also sell used, said springs inside are going. Not a problem yet but before long will need compressor but they said compressor replacement often doesn't last or work well because leaks or other problems or cost compared to new. But I can't get this bisque color anymore so should I replace compressor or are odds not good for that working out well? Thanks.

Truth be told, I feel like this would begin to snowball. At that age, it's a gamble considering the compressor runs about $350-$400 plus labor, refrigerant, and whatever environmental fees the repair company has to make. It really puts you in a bad spot. I would not personally take that risk and I would likewise advise any of my customers the same. No repair place wants to be the last to touch that.

If you can deal with the noise there is no telling how long it will last - could go years still working fine with noise before it quits working.

Thanks for the responses and the "could last a long time that way" idea. Who knows, maybe in a few years the bisque color will come back and I'll buy new then.

Inside your compressor, there is an working assembly suspended/dampened with springs.   One of your springs broke.   Your compressor likely starts and runs quietly.   There is a great deal of torque twist when a fully pressurized compressor stops abruptly.   With one of the springs broken,  the inner assembly twists, bangs on the thick outer shell resulting is a loud metal CLUNK.

You can leave it as-is.   I wouldn't waste time replacing compressor.
