Hi Douggie, thanks for bringing this up again. My optimism with the information from RSES was unfounded-- their information didn't get into these fundamentals. The ASHRAE Refrigeration Handbook, however, is a goldmine of ezzzacly this type of information and you may want to go ahead and buy a copy. It's an pretty detailed iterative design procedure using multiple charts and graphs to arrive at the optimum solution. I'll see if I can get some of that info into digital format so I can post it here.

That's pretty much it! The ASHRAE procedure is a little more convoluted but the JB procedure should yield a solution that's close enough. Great find, thanks for posting it! :dude:

And here is the long-awaited ASHRAE procedure. This is the entire chapter on refrigerant control devices, the specifics of sizing cap tubes starts on page 23.
