I understand that the life expectancy of the coating is 5 years. So it is advisable to replace an ice make at or above that age as oppose to repairing it.

No, not unless the teflon finish is coming off the mold.  This presents a health hazard, too-- this stuff has been linked to arthritis and some other debiliatating health problems.
