I did make sure the flange in the tub was clean and coated the new sump gasket with liquid soap.  Is it even conceivable that a new sump housing with all three locking tabs in place can leak?  Seems like a LOT of compression involved in the operation.  That being said, I double checked the drain hose on the drain pump- it was completely installed up to the flange on the pump.  I did move the clamp a bit closer to the pump housing- not that I think that could've done anything.  Seems like a really tough thing to troubleshoot.

When clamping it's a feel sort of thing to not overtightened and to not tighten enough. Next time you lube a gasket use rinse aid if you really have to. Best thing to do now is get a mirror and try to locate leak. I've never actually put a pump in this particular brand but other brands I have. Usually it's a matter of getting everything to fit perfectly and to not overtighten. Just started working for a Whirlpool only servicer last week so eventually I'll be well versed on these in the near future.

Would filling the tub manually (up to and above the sump) be a good way to figure out whether it's the sump or not?  Or does water really have to be sloshing around to cause a drip???

It all depends where the leak is, you can just simply let the dishwasher fill until you hear the wash motor start. Then slowly open the door and turn off the breaker to the dishwasher. Then try to find the leak. Unless you know exactly how much water it fills with you won't know if you're causing a different leak then what you're looking for.

Thanks for the advice!  Turns out it only took 20 minutes or so of observation to figure it out.  The good news:  It's not the sump!  It's the drain pump- dripped from the bottom as soon as the drain cycle started.  This is just a twist/click connection- I'm sure that it clicked when I re-installed the drain pump.  I guess the only thing to do here is pull everything out again and remove and re-install the drain pump?  Once this cycle is done I'll verify that the drain pump can't turn any more clockwise so that I can be certain it clicked firmly into place.  Is there any kind of seal between the drain pump and the housing that could be damage?

Thanks again!

Dang.  I got inpatient and stopped the cycle, killed the breaker, and reached under to the drain pump...and was able to twist another 1/4" or so.  So this appears to be Stupid Homeowner Error.  I'm pretty anal about stuff like this (but I'm also built with a more than ample dose of "I Do Not Know what I Do Not Know"!) so I'm pretty disappointed in myself...

Will report back at end of cycle.  Hopefully all is dry!

Yes, usually a ribbed seal that comes on the pump.

It's more about time though!  I'd be waiting until next week sometime for a shop to come out and look at it.  I mean, good for those guys, they have all the work they can handle, but I don't want to hand wash for two weeks while waiting.
