We have a Kichenaid Side by Side built in, KSSC42FKS01. Evaporator fan was making noise and eventually just stopped.
The freezer temp had risen to 38 and the fridge section was at 55. When I opened up the panel inside the freezer,
there was a big chunk of ice right next to the evaporator fan. I thought maybe the fan motor burnt out because of the ice so I let it defrost and replaced the fan motor.
I plugged the unit back in and the temp never goes below the ones above and the new evaporator motor still does not work. The new motor came with a small circular
device that clipped on to part of the coil, I am assuming that it is a sensor?
Can anyone tell me what the next step would be? I'm not sure what to replace next. Every article I read about ice build up and higher temps lead me to believe that the
evaporator motor was bad.
Thanks for any help!
John

Is the evaporator covered in an even layer of frost?

Posted

Thank you for responding!

Yes it is.  It was not when I originally opened it up with the old evaporator motor, but I replaced it and then left the cover off the evaporator to see if the fan would go on and that's when it started to frost over. I thought that was bad so I turned it off so it would defrost. Is that good or bad that it had an even layer of frost?

Good, you need to see if fan is getting voltage. If fan isn’t getting voltage you need new control board.

Thank you!

I have a multi meter but can't find a wiring diagram online to see which 2 of the 4 wires going to the motor to check for voltage. The wires are Red, White, Blue, Yellow. Would it be the Red and White wires? I appreciate your help.

Not 100% sure which ones to check but I do know it's dc voltage. I think maybe white and yellow with door switch taped up or held down. If compressor is on both condenser fan in back by compressor and "evaporator" fan that you're checking should be on. Unless there's an algorithm in the control to leave it off until the evaporator is cold enough so it doesn't fling water all over the place.

Thank you again! It looks like the fan motor that I bought online is bad. Going to a local parts store in the morning.
