Hotpoint gas range RGB745BEA2WH front burners spark and light rear burners do not spark

Recommended Posts

The title says it all ... I have a Hotpoint gas range, model RGB745BEA2WH. The two front burners spark and light properly. The two back burners appear to have no spark, but will light when flame is applied.

I have taken the burner cap and head off to ensure that they are clean.

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance!

Do the burners that aren't working cause the other burners to spark when trying to light them. If not then you need to replace the burner valve switches. If they do you need to check the electrodes at each burner. Before anything you can sand down the area where they're supposed to spark at on the electrode and burner head. Plus use a sewing needle to clean the holes in the burners heads. Could also be a grounding issue.

Great test!

So, no matter which burner I try to light, both front burners spark. The rear left doesn't spark at all. The rear right sparked a couple of times and then quit. I have the same result no matter which burner I turn to light. i.e. if I turn the right rear to light, the two front burners spark but the two rear burners do not.

I've replaced the gas orifice spuds in the past as my wife still managed to spill liquids into the "sealed" burners. That, plus the fact that all burners light properly with a lighter, suggests that this isn't a gas delivery problem. All burners also work properly once lit.

Could you specify where I should try sanding? Could I possibly use an emery board to "file" near the electrode that protrudes from the ceramic insulator? These ignition electrodes are replaceable, are they not?

Also, both rear burners were working up until a few weeks ago.

Thanks for your help!

Sounds like either spark module, burner electrodes, or sanding with steel wool, sand paper, and yes could use an emery board. Sand where burner head makes contact with screws underneath burner head. Sounds like electrode at those two burners, or spark module you can test by taking a picture of wiring before swapping and two wires from one that sparks the one that doesn't from the spark module. Make sure wiring is seated all the way with no breaks in the wiring.

Nathaniel, I appreciate your advice and I don't mean to sound simple, but I am unsure where you are suggesting that I sand. Are you suggesting that I sand someplace under the top of the range ... as in lift up the top of the range and sand somewhere there? I had thought you were suggesting sanding the igniter electrode on the surface of the range. Thanks for any clarification you can provide.

Pull off the burner heads and sand along all the metal. The burner heads just lift off. Make sure the burner head caps are seated correctly. Be careful not to crack the igniters before putting back on. Most likely if no spark then you have to replace the electrodes or spark module. Check repair clinic for the parts using your model number.
