Returning guest presenter Aaron Wilson is back for another exciting discussion. This time, we'll be talking about...
The Science of CYA: How to Keep the Customer Safe, Document Your Work, and Not Get Sued
We take on a lot of liability as appliance repair techs, and that can get us into sticky situations whether we've done anything wrong or not. Aaron will be teaching us all about how to navigate this side of the trade.
We'll start by going over a tragic, real-world case study where a sloppy installation had lethal results, analyzing exactly how the installer's negligence caused this. From there, our scope will expand to what kind of safety precautions we should implement in our own work, both for the customer's sake and for our own.
But even if you do everything perfectly, there's still the famous "technician witch hunt." Well, we'll also talk about how to deal with that by thoroughly documenting your work and putting yourself beyond legal reproach.
A little about our guest, Aaron Wilson:
Aaron has been in the appliance repair trade for about 15 years, starting out by doing installations before moving on to bigger and better things. He worked for C&W Services as a Sub-Zero authorized servicer for a time and thereafter joined Mr. Appliance of Highland Park in the Dallas area, where he worked for years as the lead technician and field service manager. These days, he's making sure that all the appliances of everyone's favorite fried chicken place are in tip-top shape as the Quality and Performance Consultant for the southwest branch of Chick-fil-A. In addition, he has taught many classes on refrigeration repair and advanced diagnostics, during which time he also developed training material for the soft skills side of things, which he is delighted to share with you. On top of all that he's a certified graduate of the Master Samurai Tech Academy, so he knows his stuff!

Bought new, worked fine for 8 months then stopped producing ice. Test 56 showed EO (no errors) for several days. I've replaced water filter then flushed, cleaned coils, unplugged unit multiple times, ran several forced defrosts both Lo and Sh, and troubleshot through every diagnostic mode service test countless times. Still no ice after after almost a week but service test 56 has changed from EO to E5 and test 59 changed from 01 to 02.

Results of most recent diagnostic tests below:

1 - 01
2 - 01
3 - 01/02 Felt Fan
4 - 01/02 Heard Compressor on/off
6 - 01
7 - 01
8 - LEDs Passed
9 through 17 - Skipped
18 - Passed
19 - 01/02 Toggled, nothing observed
20 through 31 - Skipped
32 - 01
33 - 38
34 - 01
35 - 01/02 Toggled, nothing observed
36 - 01
37 - 01
38 - Ran both Sh and Lo
40 - 01/02 Toggled, nothing observed
41 through 44 - Skipped
45 - 02/03/02 Heard Water Fill. Successfully completed the 57 Harvest test prior
46 - Success, Hand Wet
56 - E5 = Ice Maker Thermositer is bad. Ice storage temperature satisfied but ice mold in frozen state too long. Possible ice mold thermistor issue.
57 - 01
58 - 00/10 = Temperature is cooler than harvest temperature
59 - 10/02 then went 30/01 and retried, same results, harvest did not complete when rotating clockwise

Fridge/Freezer temps were on factory recommended settings (37/0). Both Ice makers stopped producing ice. Changed settings to 33/-5. Remaining ice stayed cold and did not melt, despite fridge/freezer temperatures becoming noticeably warmer. Service Test 56 showed EO = no errors for past three days and still did not make ice. Test 59 would complete successfully.

Now, three days into troubleshooting, unplugging several times for 10 minutes at a time, and running more than 5 auto defrosts, its showing E5 error and wont complete the harvest for test 59.

What's 8 months old the refrigerator or the ice maker? Your temps are good for producing ice. You might have the ice maker with the test button on it, if so it's manilla colored and a small square that has to be held in toward the front right hand side just past the white ice maker cover.
