Returning guest presenter Aaron Wilson is back for another exciting discussion. This time, we'll be talking about...
The Science of CYA: How to Keep the Customer Safe, Document Your Work, and Not Get Sued
We take on a lot of liability as appliance repair techs, and that can get us into sticky situations whether we've done anything wrong or not. Aaron will be teaching us all about how to navigate this side of the trade.
We'll start by going over a tragic, real-world case study where a sloppy installation had lethal results, analyzing exactly how the installer's negligence caused this. From there, our scope will expand to what kind of safety precautions we should implement in our own work, both for the customer's sake and for our own.
But even if you do everything perfectly, there's still the famous "technician witch hunt." Well, we'll also talk about how to deal with that by thoroughly documenting your work and putting yourself beyond legal reproach.
A little about our guest, Aaron Wilson:
Aaron has been in the appliance repair trade for about 15 years, starting out by doing installations before moving on to bigger and better things. He worked for C&W Services as a Sub-Zero authorized servicer for a time and thereafter joined Mr. Appliance of Highland Park in the Dallas area, where he worked for years as the lead technician and field service manager. These days, he's making sure that all the appliances of everyone's favorite fried chicken place are in tip-top shape as the Quality and Performance Consultant for the southwest branch of Chick-fil-A. In addition, he has taught many classes on refrigeration repair and advanced diagnostics, during which time he also developed training material for the soft skills side of things, which he is delighted to share with you. On top of all that he's a certified graduate of the Master Samurai Tech Academy, so he knows his stuff!

Edgestar BIDW1802 Dishwasher - Started with E4 temp. error, now wash pump not running.

From the start, I was getting an E4 code after wash cycles. Dishes were still clean, and I could run the dishwasher for another cycle after I reset it. Eventually it just stopped cleaning dishes.

Ran factory diagnostics, I'll refer to the following as baseline condition... it fills with water fine, it heats the water but the temperature readings are incorrect, like 20-30*C below what I measure inside the dishwasher, it is completely silent when it is supposed to be running the wash pump, then the drain pumps works fine to drain the sump.

First I replace the thermistor, this didn't change any of the baseline behavior. Next I replaced the user interface board still no change in baseline conditions. Next I replaced the PCB, somehow still no change to baseline conditions.
At this point thought maybe the wash pump/motor had issues. Last night I removed the wash pump assembly and took it to a electrical motor repair shop. They tested it and said it works fine.

So at this point, the temperature reading is incorrect and the wash pump doesn't work at all.

What can I try next to avoid buying a new dishwasher?

  1. Replace any additional parts?
  2. Can I try to test the PCB with a multimeter to figure out what's malfunctioning?
  3. ANYTHING else I can do?

Service Manual: https://www.manualslib.com/manual/1533169/Edgestar-Bidw1802.html

Also, this dishwasher appears to be the same as the Frigidaire FFBD1831 if that helps in any way.

Revision... it gave me the E3 code, NOT E4. Also, after diagnostic mode finishes the screen displays "F2"

Can't figure out how to delete this post but...

Reinstalled the wash pump, hooked everything back up, and everything appears to be working fine now!
