Kitchenaid KODE500ESS02 error F2E1

Hello I have a KitchenAid built in wall oven model kode500ess02 and keep getting an F2E1 error. I noticed it's happening when steam pours out of a vent and covers the control panel. Has anyone experienced this? How did you fix it? Also note that once the control panel drys out from the steam it starts working again.

Looks like the service tech sheet is probably taped to the top of the oven if you know how to pull it from the wall.  

Looked up F2E1 and found it just means what it shows that the keyboard is disconnected and or keyboard is stuck.

It looks like there is a blower that should be running to exhaust out the front I guess.  Does that run?  I would think it should in order to keep the steam off the control panel.  

If you're feeling adventurous; one time I had a similar issue with a dishwasher control panel getting fried by steam and heat.  I bought a new control panel but sealed it with liquid electrical tape. My theory was if its suppose to survive heat and steam in the first place, a coating of sealant should't be detrimental.  Never had an issue aghain before replacing the dishwasher for other reasons.

I'm working in a similar direction I bought some 3/4" wide HVAC foil tape in going to seal the bottom of the panel iwo the vent and see if that helps keep the moisture out of the panel.  I also plan to use some of the same material to extend the existing vent out past the control panel.  I'm hoping this works.  That said placing a fan in front of the oven has also allowed us to bake.

Are you able to turn on the built in fan?  It may just turn on based on temperature and maybe it has failed for some reason

These membrane keyboards are subject to all kinds of heat damage. The steam is definitely affecting it but if there were a fan issue then that should have popped an error code long before it got hot enough.  These are built by Whirlpool and their oven cooling fans are known for speed sensor issues and fan errors. Find the tech sheet and pull up diagnostics and see if there are any stored error codes. I believe Cancel Cancel Start will enter the diagnostics menu.

The 3/4" HVAC foil tape so far seems to be doing the trick.  I baked a pan of water to really get some steam action at 450 and opened the door a bunch of times to bathe the panel in steam and no more errors.  For $8 if it holds up it's a hell of a fix.  Beats buying a 600 dollar control panel any day.

I have two similar KitchenAid wall ovens (KOSE500ESS02) and both have the same problem with steam from the oven triggering an F2E1 error.  When it dries out it works fine.  Toggling the oven breaker also temporarily clears out the error until more steam triggers it again. 

How has the 3/4" HVAC foil tape held up?  

Looking at the picture, did you just run it along the bottom edge of the control panel covering the joint between the black oven body and the silver panel?  It also looks like you stopped at the model number label instead of running across the whole bottom of the panel or did you remove the label, run under it and then reattach it?

How did you handle the vent hole next to the model number label?  It looks like you ran some tape into that as well.
