Washer is about 5 years old. Recently, I've observed a small pile of metal shavings near the front left foot of the machine. Haven't opened it up yet to take a look. Any ideas of what to look for?

I'd start by looking for a stack of cash.

No idea on this one until you open it up.

Metal shavings is vague.

Can you take a small picture of the area in question, along with the shavings?
