The small RV park I live in has a Maytag LAT2301AAE washer in the laundry room. I occasionally help the owners with minor repairs. We had a problem recently with the auger not rotating properly and I replaced it. I noticed when we were looking at it that the agitator shaft will lift out if you lift on the auger without loosening the set screw. I didn't worry about it at the time because it seemed to stay in place otherwise.

However, today someone said it wasn't agitating. I went and looked and the agitator and shaft had lifted up about two inches and wasn't engaged with the transmission. I pushed it down and it seems to be working. But I'm pretty sure that shaft shouldn't lift out.

After looking at the diagrams on partselect.com, I suspect that the problem is #16, the "Agitator Shaft Collar" has either broken or come out. It's Whirlpool part #WP22002340.

Any advice on this or anything else we should look at. And the best way to get into it to look at that part?

Thanks,

David Chamberlain

@davidc1857 Looks like the locking collar on top Ref#16, (accessible after removing agitator), and possibly the o-ring Ref#14 if it's missing should be all you need and no disassembly of transmission needed.

Is the locking collar completely missing - it may have came off at some point and got wrapped up in someones clothing or removed from bottom of spin basket after someone finished washing when it fell out for whatever reason.

The inner tub and top of the tub seal will have to be removed to replace the plastic locking collar,  very common on the last few years of the dependable care washer

Oh ya, I forgot that is under the main stem seal/spin basket hub - Tub top, agitator, spin basket and stem seal/basket support all have to be removed
